Abalone Life Cycle

Abalone is in gastropoda class that prefers to live in deep sea. Commonly found attached to the rocks where there are plenty of algae, which is their main food. The most preferable are Gracilaria sp. , Acantophora sp. and Ulva sp.

During the daylight hours, they hide in the sand or seek habitat in crevices or underside of rocks. They do not prefer daylight, but active at night.
Abalone reproduces when the male spreads the sperm to fertilize with the ovum of the female. After a day the fertilized eggs hatch into larvae and then juvenile. Since they are very young, the juvenile is not able to consume algae but only plankton and microscopic aliment . After 3 months they begin to feed on algae.
At Phuket Abalone Farm, we seed Haliotis Diversicolor     species. Its common name is is "Nine Holes" or "Taiwanese Abalone" , since it has 7 open pores on its shell. The first two pores are the water paths, which contain gums for respiration. For the other pores, some are for fertilization by spreading gamete, others are for emitting the waste.
Abalone at Phuket Abalone Farm has small and thin shell but gives a better yield and unique taste.
Phuket Abalone is accepted by importing countries for its quality and taste, with soft, sweet, and crisp meat, which deserves to be, called “Majestic food”.

Why is Abalone?

Abalone belong to the Shell family that is one of the most valuable seafood. They have long history going strong into the 21st century. At the end of Western Han Dynasty, the first emperor Wang Mang of the new Dynasty (9AD-23AD) was very fond of abalone. And the hero cacao of three Kingdoms (220AS-280AD) was also a great fan of the shellfish.
A great poet XU Dong Bo of southern Sung Dynasty (1127AD-1279AD) wrote a poem called “Fu Fish Song” (Fu Fish is the classical name of Abalone), praising the wonder and preciousness of abalone.
For most people, abalone are comparatively costly. To eat the best grade abalone in China will cost about two years’ salary of regular Chinese citizen. Abalone is valuable, not only because of the long cultivation period and great demand, but also because of its nutritional properties recognized the world over. From early times, sick elderly and young family members alike are often offered boiled abalone soup as a cure, as much for its healthy composition as for its good taste. Even cultivated abalone must be raised with natural food only. It is one of the most expensive ingredients added to such high-class cuisines as Shark’s Fin soup, Monk jumps over the Wall, and swallow’s nest soup. It’s potency is said to be good for eyesight, strengthening immunity, and can prevent some types of cancer.
